Google Is Answering Questions About Your Brand Before Anyone Reaches Your Website

Google Is Answering Questions About Your Brand Before Anyone Reaches Your Website

Try something.
Open Google.
Search your company name.
Then search your company name plus “pricing”.
Then plus “reviews”.
Then your name versus your biggest competitor.

There is a good chance you saw an AI summary at the top.
Before your website.
Before your Google Business Profile.
Before anything you wrote yourself.

That summary is now one of the first things people learn about you.
And you didn’t write it.

This changed fast

For a long time, AI Overviews mostly appeared on general questions.
“How do I fix a leaking tap?”
“What is a CRM?”

Branded searches were different.
If someone searched your company name, Google usually just showed your website.

That is no longer true.
According to DemandSphere data reported by Two Octobers, AI Overviews on branded queries jumped from around 25% to more than 80% over recent months.
So far it mostly affects larger companies, but the direction is clear.

At the same time, Google is folding AI Mode into regular results.
On some searches, AI Overviews now expand into longer answers automatically.
On 14 October, some people even spotted an AI Mode-style sidebar, with chat history, appearing on the normal results page.

Why this matters for a business

Imagine someone has already heard of you.
Maybe a friend recommended you.
Maybe they saw your post on LinkedIn.

They search your name to check you out.
And the AI summary says something that is out of date.
An old price.
A service you stopped offering.
A location you moved from years ago.
A competitor described as the better option.

That person might never click through to your website to see the correct version.
The summary already answered their question.
Just not correctly.

You can’t edit the answer. You can edit the sources.

AI summaries are built from what is already published about you.
Your website.
Your Google Business Profile.
Reviews.
Directories.
Social profiles.
Articles that mention you.

So the fix is not to “optimise the AI”.
The fix is to make sure everything it reads tells the same, accurate story.

1. Run the brand search test every month.
Your name.
Your name plus pricing, reviews, location, “is it legit”, and “vs” your main competitor.
Screenshot what you see.
It takes ten minutes.

2. Fix the facts on your own website first.
Your About page should clearly say what you do, who you do it for and where you operate.
If you publish pricing, keep it current.
If you don’t, say how pricing works.
An FAQ page that answers the questions people actually ask is one of the most useful things you can have.

3. Update your Google Business Profile.
Hours, services, description, photos, categories.
We explained why this matters so much in Your Google Business Profile Is Now Your Homepage.

4. Clean up old listings.
Directories with your old address.
Profiles you forgot about.
An abandoned social account with a five-year-old bio.
All of it can end up in an answer.

5. Ask happy customers for reviews.
Recent, specific reviews give AI summaries real material about what it’s like to work with you.

You can now see some of this in Search Console

Since 31 August, Google Search Console shows impressions in AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover by page, country, device and date.
It does not show clicks yet.
The UK’s competition regulator expects click data by March 2027.

Even without clicks, it tells you which pages Google is using in AI answers.
If an outdated page is getting AI impressions, that’s the one to update first.

The bottom line

Your website is no longer the only first impression.
For a growing number of people, the first impression is a paragraph Google wrote about you.

You can’t control that paragraph directly.
But you can make sure every source it reads is accurate, consistent and current.
