How Much Does an AI Chatbot Cost in 2026? From Free Widgets to Custom Agents

Chatbot pricing confuses people for a good reason: the word "chatbot" now covers everything from a free popup that says "We'll get back to you!" to an AI agent that genuinely handles half your support queue. Same word, thousand-x price difference.

So instead of one number, here's the honest map — four tiers, what each actually does, and where the money goes.

Tier 1: Rule-based widgets — free to ₹2,000/month

Button-driven bots: "Press 1 for pricing." No AI involved, just a menu wearing a chat interface. They're fine for capturing an email after hours, and that's about the ceiling. Ask one a real question and it shrugs. If your goal is simply "don't miss enquiries at 2am," start here — honestly.

Tier 2: Subscription AI bots — ₹2,000–₹15,000/month

Intercom, Tidio, Crisp and friends, now with an LLM inside. You point them at your FAQ, they answer conversationally. Genuinely decent for common questions — and genuinely limited by how little they know about your business. They've read your help page, not your product catalogue, your policies, or your tone. They also charge per seat or per conversation, so the price grows with your success.

Tier 3: Custom RAG assistants — ₹1.5–5 lakhs to build

This is where the interesting stuff lives, and it's most of the chatbot work we do. RAG — retrieval-augmented generation — means the bot doesn't answer from an LLM's general memory. It retrieves from your actual content first (docs, catalogue, policies, past tickets) and answers from what it found, with sources. That one architectural choice is the difference between a bot that says plausible things and a bot that says true things.

What the build cost covers: preparing your knowledge base (usually the biggest chunk), the retrieval pipeline, tone and guardrails, integrations with your CRM or booking system, and testing against the weird questions real customers actually ask. Tier 4: AI agents — ₹3 lakhs and up

Agents don't just answer — they act: look up an order, process the refund, book the meeting, update the CRM. Each action is an integration that needs building and, more importantly, permissioning and testing, because an agent that can do things can do them wrongly. Costs scale with how many actions you trust it with. Most businesses don't need this on day one; the good news is a well-built Tier 3 assistant upgrades into one without starting over.

The running costs nobody mentions

Custom bots have two ongoing lines: model API usage (for most SMB traffic, thousands per month, not lakhs — usage-based, so it scales with actual conversations) and maintenance, because your business changes and a bot answering from January's prices in June is worse than no bot. Budget for a light monthly refresh.

The real question: what's a conversation worth?

Skip "what does it cost" and ask "what does it replace?" Count your repetitive support hours; multiply by what that time costs. Count after-hours enquiries that currently die in an inbox; multiply by your close rate.
