The 15-Minute Website Audit: A Checklist Anyone Can Run Before Spending on Marketing

The 15-Minute Website Audit: A Checklist Anyone Can Run Before Spending on Marketing

Here's a pattern we see all the time: a business decides it's time to grow, sets a marketing budget, and starts running ads — pointing at a website nobody has honestly looked at in two years. The ads work. Traffic arrives. Nothing happens. The money quietly disappears.

The problem usually isn't the marketing. It's the website. And you can find most of the issues yourself, in about fifteen minutes, without paying anyone. Here's the exact checklist we run when a new client first talks to us.

Minute 1–3: Open your site on your phone. Your actual phone.

Not the office Wi-Fi. Switch to mobile data, open an incognito tab, and type in your URL. Now count seconds until you can actually read the page. One or two? Fine. Four or more? You have a problem — most visitors are gone by then.

While you're there, try to do the thing you want customers to do. Tap the enquiry button. Fill the form. Was anything annoying? Did the keyboard cover the field? Did a popup jump on you before you'd read a single line? Every annoyance you just felt, your customers feel too — except they don't push through it, because they don't care about your business yet.

Minute 4–6: The five-second test

Show your homepage to someone who doesn't know your business — a friend, your cousin, anyone. Give them five seconds, then close the laptop and ask three questions: What does this company do? Who is it for? What are you supposed to do next?

If they hesitate on any of those, your homepage is making people work too hard. The fix usually isn't a redesign — it's a clearer headline and one obvious button. You'd be surprised how many beautiful websites fail this test while ugly ones pass it.

Minute 7–9: Trust signals

Buyers in 2026 are sceptical by default, and honestly, they've earned the right to be. Go through your site and check:

  • Is there a real address, a real phone number, a real email — somewhere easy to find?
  • Are there real testimonials with real names and companies, or vague quotes from "John, Business Owner"?
  • Do your case studies show actual work, or stock photos of people pointing at whiteboards?
  • Is your copyright year current? (A footer that says 2023 whispers "nobody maintains this".)

None of these feel like marketing. All of them decide whether a visitor believes your marketing.

Minute 10–12: SEO basics — no tools needed

Right-click your homepage and choose "view page source" (on your laptop for this one). Press Ctrl+F and look for <title>. Read what's inside it. Is it something like "Home" or your bare company name? That's a wasted title — it should say what you do and where, in plain words a customer would search for.

Then search Google for site:yourwebsite.com. This shows what Google has indexed. Two red flags: far fewer pages than you expected (indexing problem), or pages you forgot existed with embarrassing old titles (housekeeping problem).

Minute 13–15: The one question that matters

Open your most important page — the one your ads point at — and read it slowly, out loud. Does it talk about the customer's problem, or does it talk about you? Count how many sentences start with "We". If it's most of them, flip the script. People don't buy because you're passionate about excellence. They buy because you clearly understand the thing that's bothering them.

What to do with what you found

You'll probably end this exercise with a short, uncomfortable list. Good — that list is worth more than another month of ad spend. Fix the trust items first (they're usually quick), then speed, then clarity.

And if you want the deeper technical picture — the stuff you can't see by eye, like Core Web Vitals, structured data and the thirty-odd checks Google actually cares about — run our free website audit. It's instant, it uses real Google Lighthouse data, and it'll hand you a prioritised fix list in about thirty seconds. Fifteen minutes of your time plus thirty seconds of ours, and you'll know exactly where your website stands before you spend another rupee on marketing.
